Papyrus is a material prepared in Egypt from the stem of a water plant and was used for many different types of writing. The chapters began to appear in Egyptian tombs around 1600 BC. The Book of the Dead was created for dead people to read when they are entering the underworld. It would help the dead being overcome obstacles by giving out different routes and clues on their journey. The book also intended on retrieving protection and guidance from the gods while in the underworld.
